We'll be picking up our summer music + grilling series with a live performance by Chicago-based acoustic bluegrass band, Big Sadie, and a special menu featuring dishes from neighborhood chefs Bill Kim (Urbanbelly), Dennis Bernard (Dove’s Luncheonette) and Julie Warpinski (Big Star). In addition to live music and limited-time-only bites, guests will also enjoy special cocktails created by Big Star and Urbanbelly. Menu items and cocktails will be available a la carte and there is no additional cost to enjoy the live music.

Join Big Star onfor an unprecedented whiskey class covering the history and taste of Elijah Craig bourbon, as well as an overview of bourbon’s connection to music. Guided by Heaven Hill’s Master Distiller Denny Potter, the intimate class features a tasting of several rare editions of Elijah Craig: Barrel Proof, 18 year, 21 year and 23 year. Bluegrass artist and whiskey professor Bernie Lubbers will also be on-site to provide a musical history of bourbon.

Join Big Star and Heaven Hill on December 20, for our first annual Country Christmas Show featuring local artist Quarter Mile Thunder (Ben Clarke) alongside Angela James and Jordan Martins. Reborn as the Big Star house band, the trio will perform two sets of band-arranged holiday country favorites, as well as other Americana classics, leaning heavily on Townes Van Zandt. Emotive, ethereal and beautifully haunting, Quarter Mile Thunder and Angela James’ performances evoke hushing Americana authenticity.
At 6:00pm, the lights will dim and we’ll welcome one and all to what we know will be a highly memorable live experience. Seasonal food and cocktail specials will be featured as well.

SEMI-PRIVATES AT BIG STAR:
Big Star provides semi-private space that can accommodate groups from 15 to 45 guests in our atrium space. Semi-private events are 2 hours in duration. Minimum food & beverage prices are dependent on the day & season of the event.
BUYOUTS AT BIG STAR:
Big Star is able to accommodate groups up to 140 guests in the winter, and up to 300 in the summer when our patio is open. Buyouts can be booked for a 4 hour time frame during lunch or dinner. Minimum food & beverage prices are dependent on the day & season of the event.

Join us for Tortilla and Salsa 101, a hands on class covering tortilla and salsa making, all while chowing down on ceviche, guacamole and tacos. The class offers the rare opportunity to learn directly from the pros in our commissary kitchen, all with a margarita (or beer) in hand. The class begins at 7:00pm and space is limited to 12 pupils per evening, making for a truly intimate evening.

We at Big Star jump on any opportunity to throw a party, and releasing two Belgian ales aged in Lunazul Tequila barrels with Goose Island Beer Company seems like a good enough reason to us! Throw Dove’s Luncheonette into the mix, a few killer DJs and we’ve got ourselves a rager. On Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00pm chefs Dennis Bernard and Tom Van Lente will plate up bites from both Damen haunts, alongside pours a plenty of Big Star and Goose’s Sophia as well as Goose’s Summer, My Shout, the Illinois and Halia.

Big Star is home to a very special bourbon barrel with more mileage than many small cars; it has aged bourbon, mezcal and most recently a collaboration beer with Firestone Walker Brewing Company. To launch the brew (and our little barrel's safe return home) we're hosting a four-course paired dinner on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30pm.
The barrel began its journey as home to a house-selected W.L. Weller Antique 107 bourbon, before making its way to Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. There we worked with Fidencio to develop a bourbon barrel-aged mezcal. After a tenuous trip through Mexican customs, the mezcal made its way across country lines and back to Chicago.
A barrel with two lives is a very fortunate existence, one we recounted in conversation to Firestone Walker, and thus our little barrel made its way to Paso Robles, California to blend a beer. The outcome of the project is "Viaje de Roble," a hugely expressive strong ale. Having spent a year in a border crossing barrel, wood seasoned with the terroir of Kentucky, Mexico and California, the barrel is home. We're hosting a dinner to celebrate!

For Chef Cary Taylor’s first beer dinner of the season, he has teamed up with local beer heroes Off Color Brewing for a four-course paired evening on Tuesday, December 9th at 6:30pm. Each course will be paired with a different Off Color Brewing selection, plus a welcome beer on entry. The excitement doesn't stop there: brewers from Off Color will be on-hand to field questions, and walk guests through the brewing process. Headley will set up shop on Monday, November 10th at 6:00pm to serve up his legendary veggie burger, and offer samples from his new cookbook “Brooks Headley's Fancy Desserts. To sweeten the deal, Headley will curate the evening’s musical selection…scratchy vinyl is surely in our future.

Preparing dinner alongside acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson in his Harlem home is an opportunity few of us will ever experience. However, a cooking demonstration from Samuelsson’s “Marcus Off Duty: The Recipes I Cook at Home” with special guest Paul Kahan is a pretty good approximation.
On Saturday, November 8th at 7:00pm Chef Marcus Samuelsson will join Paul Kahan in Big Star’s newly constructed Commissary Kitchen for a cooking demo and light bites showcasing recipes from "Marcus Off Duty." Menu highlights include Chipotle Chicken Skewers and Steak Fajitas straight off the grill, as well as Fried Snapper Tacos and Ethiopian Tostadas.

The Damen CTA Blue Line stop is closed for construction until mid-December. Here are a few more things to note when heading to Big Star in the next 2 months.
North Avenue will be closed just West of North/Damen/Milwaukee Avenue for 70 days starting Monday October 13th through December 22, 2014. North Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic Sunday - Thursday from 9pm-5am and Friday/Saturday from 9pm - 7am. Pedestrian access will be maintained on one side of the street. Buses will be rerouted around the street closure.
Damen Avenue will also be closed to vehicular traffic in the overnight hours for a 63 day period from October 20, 2104 - December 22, 2014. The hours of the street closure will be consistent with North Avenue: Sunday -Thursday 9pm-5am and Friday/Saturday 9pm-7am.
